The Government of India has recently declared the Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ). The decision aims to protect the region’s rich biodiversity while promoting sustainableand <a target="_blank" href="http://localhost:3000/admin/setting">responsible eco-tourism</a>.The Parvati–Arga Bird Sanctuary was officially notified in 1997 and is located about 40 kilometres from Gonda district. Spread across nearly 11 square kilometres, the sanctuary includes two major freshwater wetlands—Parvati and Arga—which together form a permanent and ecologically important habitat. These wetlands play a crucial role in maintaining the local ecosystem and supporting diverse wildlife.Every year, the sanctuary becomes a winter home for more than 40,000 migratory water birds that travel from Central Asia and the Tibetan region. This makes it one of the most significant bird habitats in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The sanctuary is also home to the Sarus Crane, the state bird of Uttar Pradesh, along with several other resident and migratory species. With the declaration of the Eco-Sensitive Zone, construction, mining, and industrial activities around the sanctuary will be strictly regulated. These measures are expected to reduce environmental pressure, protect natural habitats, and ensure long-term conservation. At the same time, the ESZ status will help strengthen local livelihoods by encouraging nature-based tourism and conservation-friendly economic activities.Overall, this step reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding ecologically sensitive areas while balancing conservation with sustainable development.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a landmark step toward environmentally sensitive infrastructure by developing India’s first wildlife-safe road on National Highway–45 in Madhya Pradesh. This pioneering initiative reflects a growing recognition that infrastructure development must progress in harmony with ecological conservation. The project has been implemented on a 2 km ecologically sensitive ghat section within the 11.96 km long Hiran–Sindoor stretch of the Bhopal–Jabalpur route. This segment lies close to the Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, formerly known as the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, a region known for frequent wildlife movement across the highway.A key feature of this wildlife-safe corridor is the use of 5 mm thick raised thermoplastic “table-top red markings” on the road surface. These markings act as visual and tactile cues for drivers, encouraging them to slow down smoothly without causing discomfort or sudden braking. By naturally moderating vehicle speed, the risk of animal–vehicle collisions is significantly reduced. In addition, 25 dedicated wildlife underpasses have been constructed to allow animals to cross the highway safely along their natural movement paths. The corridor is further secured with 8-foot-high fencing on both sides, guiding wildlife toward safe crossing points and preventing accidental entry onto fast-moving traffic lanes. Advanced speed detection devices and surveillance cameras have also been installed to ensure compliance and continuous monitoring. With an estimated investment of ₹122 crore, this project aligns with NHAI’s Green Highway Initiative, which emphasizes sustainability, safety, and environmental responsibility. If proven successful, this innovative model is expected to be replicated across other national highways in India, setting a new standard for balancing infrastructure growth with wildlife conservation.

The Government of India has introduced an important reform in the coal sector to support industrial growth and improve energy security. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the CoalSETU Policy.Under this reform, a new “CoalSETU Window” has been added to the existing NRS (Non-Regulated Sector) linkage policy. This window allows coal to be used for any industrial purpose as well as for exports, removing earlier restrictions on end-use.With the CoalSETU window, domestic industries will receive coal linkages through long-term auctions. Unlike previous policies, there will be no end-use conditions, giving industries greater flexibility in how they use coal. This change is expected to significantly improve the Ease of Doing Business in India and reduce the country’s dependence on imported coal.To ensure fair and targeted use, traders will not be allowed to participate under this window, and coking coal is excluded from the scheme. The policy is designed mainly to support genuine industrial users.Another key feature is that industries receiving coal linkages will be allowed to export up to 50% of the coal. In addition, the policy will help increase the availability of washed coal, which is more efficient and environmentally friendly.Overall, the CoalSETU Policy is a forward-looking step that strengthens India’s energy security, supports domestic manufacturing, and promotes sustainable industrial development. By providing flexibility, transparency, and long-term supply assurance, this reform marks a significant milestone in India’s coal and energy policy.

Recently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued notices to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and two others in connection with the 2019 Masala Bond issue of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Following this development, Masala Bonds have once again come into public focus. It is therefore important to understand what Masala Bonds are and why they are significant for India’s economy.Masala Bonds are rupee-denominated bonds issued outside India by Indian companies or government-backed institutions to raise capital from global markets. Although they are issued overseas, the bonds are denominated and settled in Indian rupees. Masala Bonds were first issued in 2014 by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and in 2015, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) formally permitted their issuance. One of the key features of Masala Bonds is that the foreign exchange risk is borne by the investor and not by the issuer. This protects Indian entities from fluctuations in global currency markets and reduces their exposure to exchange-rate volatility, making Masala Bonds a relatively safer borrowing option for Indian issuers. Both public and private sector entities can issue Masala Bonds. These bonds are open to investment by foreign individuals, institutional investors, and international financial organisations. Typically, the maturity period of Masala Bonds ranges from three to five years. The funds raised through Masala Bonds are mainly used for infrastructure development, housing projects, working capital requirements, and refinancing of existing debt. By enabling Indian institutions to raise funds without taking on foreign currency risk, Masala Bonds reduce dependence on external commercial borrowings in foreign currencies. At the same time, they promote the internationalisation of the Indian rupee by increasing its use in global financial markets. As a result, Masala Bonds play an important role in India’s long-term financial and economic strategy.

In a move to enhance telecommunications cybersecurity and curb cyber frauds through messaging apps, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made SIM-linking mandatory for all app-based communication services. The new regulations mandate that messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Arattai, and any other app using Indian mobile numbers for user identification must now function only on the mobile phone with the active and valid SIM card linked to that number. If the SIM card is removed from the device, the app service will automatically shut down. This ensures that only authorized users with legitimate mobile numbers can access these services, thereby reducing instances of fraud and misuse.Additionally, for apps offering web or desktop versions, a new requirement will be enforced: users will be automatically logged out after a maximum of 6 hours of inactivity. To regain access, users will need to undergo re-authentication via a QR code scan, adding another layer of security. These provisions are part of the new Telecommunication Cybersecurity regulations, introduced to combat digital crimes such as phishing, account hacking, digital arrests, and online fraud, particularly those orchestrated from abroad. The government aims to ensure that communication services in India are secure and resistant to exploitation by cybercriminals. The DoT has given app companies 90 days to implement these changes and 120 days to submit compliance reports. This step is expected to improve the overall safety of messaging platforms and reduce the growing threat of digital fraud.By enforcing SIM-linking, the government seeks to create a safer digital environment for users and prevent the misuse of communication services across India.

India has achieved a significant geopolitical milestone by securing the third position in the Asia Power Index 2025, released by Australia-based Lowy Institute. The latest rankings place the United States first and China second, while India’s rise marks a critical shift in Asia’s evolving power balance. With a score of 40 points, India has, for the first time, been classified as a “Major Power” in the index. The Asia Power Index measures countries across multiple parameters, including economic capability, military strength, diplomatic influence, future resources, and resilience. India’s improved standing reflects its rapid economic growth, growing global integration, and demographic advantages. Notably, India has surpassed Japan in economic capability, driven by sustained GDP growth, increased foreign investment, and expanding trade networks. Improvements in economic relationships underline India’s rising role in regional and global markets.India’s demographic strength and preparation for future resources—such as education, technology, and innovation—have also contributed significantly to its upward movement. The report highlights India’s continuous modernisation of military capabilities, enhancing its deterrence and regional security role. As defence infrastructure, indigenous production, and strategic readiness improve, India’s military dimension continues to strengthen steadily. However, the index also points out areas where India still faces challenges. Its performance in defence alliances, as well as diplomatic and cultural influence, remains comparatively modest, suggesting scope for deeper partnerships and stronger soft power outreach across Asia and beyond.Despite these gaps, shifting global supply chains, geopolitical realignments, and an increasingly investment-friendly policy environment are working in India’s favour. The report concludes that India is emerging as a decisive and influential power in Asia, with the potential to shape regional stability and economic growth in the decades ahead.India’s third-place ranking in the Asia Power Index 2025 is not just a statistical achievement—it is a reflection of the country’s growing strategic importance on the Asian and global stage.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Safran Electronics &amp; Defence (SED) have launched a 50:50 joint venture to produce, supply, and maintain the HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) precision-guided air-to-ground weapon system in India. This collaboration strengthens the India–France defence partnership and furthers India's commitment to enhancing domestic defence manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The HAMMER weapon system is designed for precise, long-range strikes against high-value and hardened targets. It features a range of up to 70 km, making it highly effective in stand-off engagements, even in challenging terrains such as mountains. The system can be deployed on advanced fighter aircraft like the Dassault Rafale and HAL Tejas, offering enhanced operational capabilities.Under this joint venture, BEL will manage the final assembly, testing, and quality control, ensuring the weapon system meets the highest standards. The venture also includes phased technology transfer, with an ambitious goal of achieving up to 60% indigenization in production. This will help India build a self-sustaining supply chain, reduce reliance on imports, and ensure faster deployment of the system.Initially excluded from the Rafale deal due to cost constraints, the HAMMER system was later procured for emergency use. This joint venture now guarantees India a reliable and cost-effective supply of this advanced weapon, enhancing its strategic defence capabilities. The partnership between India and France has already resulted in successful collaborations in areas such as Rafale fighter aircraft and Scorpene-class submarines. The HAMMER joint venture adds another layer of technological depth to this evolving defence relationship, reinforcing India’s position as a global leader in advanced military technology.By focusing on indigenous production, this project aligns with India's goal of achieving greater self-reliance in defence and strengthening its military capabilities for the future.

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2025, which has recently gained attention, proposes a major change in the governance of Chandigarh by bringing it under the purview of Article 240 of the Constitution. Currently, Chandigarh functions as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana and is administered as a Union Territory (UT). Administratively, the city falls under the Governor of Punjab, even though it does not have its own legislative assembly. The day-to-day governance of Chandigarh is managed by the Chief Secretary, Finance Secretary, and other Union Territory officials, making it unique among Indian cities. If the amendment is implemented, a separate Administrator or Lieutenant Governor could be appointed specifically for Chandigarh, which would effectively end the role of the Punjab Governor in the city’s administration. More importantly, the amendment would empower the President of India to directly frame rules and regulations for Chandigarh, giving these rules the same effect as laws passed by Parliament. This provision would allow the President to intervene directly in the city’s legal and administrative framework, a power not exercised in the current governance structure. The proposed changes represent a significant departure from Chandigarh’s existing model, which balances its role as a shared capital with centralized administrative control. By granting the President direct legislative authority and introducing a dedicated Administrator, the amendment could reshape the administrative hierarchy, streamline decision-making, and potentially bring greater efficiency to governance. However, it also raises questions about centralization of power and the future role of state governments in the city’s administration.Overall, if enacted, the 131st Amendment would mark a historic shift in Chandigarh’s governance, transforming it from a unique hybrid system into a more centrally controlled Union Territory with direct presidential oversight. This could have long-term implications for administrative policies, urban planning, and the balance of authority between the Centre and the states.

China is set to create the world’s first nuclear‑blast‑resistant floating artificial island, called the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Scheduled for completion by 2028, the platform will measure 138 meters long, 85 meters wide, and weigh approximately 78,000 tonnes, comparable to China’s Fujian aircraft carrier. Its main deck will rise 45 meters above the waterline. The island is designed to accommodate 238 personnel for up to four months without resupply and can travel at 15 knots in rough seas and storms. It is built to withstand extreme conditions such as high waves, typhoons, and seismic shocks, making it a durable platform for long-term ocean operations.A key feature is its nuclear-blast resistance, adhering to the GJB 1060.1-1991 military standard. Special metamaterial sandwich panels absorb and dissipate shockwaves from explosions or earthquakes, converting violent impacts into manageable vibrations to protect critical systems.Officially described as a scientific research facility, the floating island could conduct deep-sea studies, environmental monitoring, and marine research. However, experts note its mobility, resilience, and strategic scale could also serve military and surveillance purposes, potentially acting as a forward operating base in remote waters. If realized, the floating island represents a major engineering and strategic milestone, combining innovative materials, self-sufficiency, and maritime endurance. It may redefine both scientific exploration and strategic presence on the open ocean

In a landmark ruling, the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) sentenced former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for alleged crimes against humanity during her tenure. The charges stem from her alleged role in suppressing student-led protests, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,400 people and left thousands more injured. Authorities claim that Hasina ordered the use of drones, helicopters, and lethal weapons to quell the demonstrations, marking the most severe violence in Bangladesh since the 1971 Liberation War.Sheikh Hasina was not present in court at the time of the sentencing, as she is currently living in exile in India. She has denied all allegations, calling them politically motivated and biased. However, the tribunal considered some of her recent public statements as evidence supporting the conviction. The interim government of Bangladesh has described the verdict as a historic decision, emphasizing accountability and justice. On the other hand, the United Nations has expressed concern over the imposition of the death penalty, highlighting international apprehension regarding capital punishment in politically sensitive cases. In addition to her sentence, Sheikh Hasina’s political party, the Awami League, has been barred from participating in the upcoming elections scheduled for February, further reshaping the nation’s political landscape. This ruling represents a turning point in Bangladesh’s recent history, drawing global attention to issues of political accountability, human rights, and the role of international tribunals in prosecuting alleged crimes against humanity.

In a proud moment for Indian agriculture, India has exported Karnataka’s GI-tagged Indi Lime and Tamil Nadu’s GI-tagged Puliyankudi Lime to the United Kingdom for the very first time. Supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), around 350 kg of Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka, and 150 kg of Puliyankudi Lime from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, were airlifted to the UK.The Indi Lime is celebrated for its exceptional freshness, rich aroma, high juice content, and balanced tanginess, making it a premium choice among citrus fruits. On the other hand, the Puliyankudi Lime, especially the Kadayam variety, is known for its thin peel, sharp acidity, high vitamin C content, and impressive 55% juice yield. Both these limes hold Geographical Indication (GI) tags, a recognition that not only identifies their regional authenticity but also enhances their value in international markets. With the GI tag, these products gain a distinct identity and command premium prices abroad, ultimately helping farmers earn better incomes while preserving traditional farming practices. This milestone export marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s position in the global agri-export sector. It also opens up new opportunities for local growers, small-scale producers, and rural communities to benefit from international trade. As India continues to promote its unique, high-quality agricultural products across the world, it’s essential to invest in better infrastructure, branding, cold-chain logistics, and farmer training. Such initiatives will further boost exports of GI-tagged and organic products, ensuring sustainable growth and recognition for India’s diverse agricultural heritage.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has announced the formation of its 76th district, “Kalyan Singh Nagar,” in memory of former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh. He served as the Chief Minister of the state twice — first from 1991 to 1992 and again from 1997 to 1999. Born in Atrauli, Kalyan Singh was a prominent political leader whose life was deeply connected to this region. The new district, Kalyan Singh Nagar, will be carved out by combining theAtrauli and Gangiri tehsils of Aligarh district and the Dibai tehsil of Bulandshahr district. Atrauli, Kalyan Singh’s birthplace and political stronghold, will serve as the district headquarters. This reorganization aims to honor his legacy while improving local governance and administrative efficiency in the region.Under the Indian Constitution, state governments have the authority to create new districts. They can do so either through legislation or by issuing an executive order. Once the official notification is released, steps such as defining district boundaries, preparing the budget, and appointing officials are undertaken. Generally, a newly created district becomes administratively functional within three to six months. The government has estimated a total expenditure of around ₹2,000 crore for the establishment of Kalyan Singh Nagar, which will include the construction of administrative buildings, roads, offices, and other essential infrastructure. The creation of this district is expected to enhance governance, accelerate regional development, and bring better public services closer to citizens. This historic decision not only strengthens administrative convenience but also immortalizes the legacy of Kalyan Singh. The formation of Kalyan Singh Nagar marks a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing journey toward balanced regional growth and respectful remembrance of its great leaders.
