India’s First Forest University to Come Up in Gorakhpur

The Uttar Pradesh Government is set to make history by establishing India’s first dedicated Forest University in Gorakhpur, marking a major milestone in environmental education and research. This visionary initiative aims to strengthen India’s capacity in forest conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development.

The proposed university will be developed on a sprawling 125-acre campus located near the Jatayu Conservation and Breeding Centre. Its strategic location will provide students with hands-on, field-based learning opportunities within a natural ecosystem—an essential component of modern environmental education.

The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹500 crore. In a significant step forward, ₹50 crore has already been allocated as seed funding in the 2024 state budget, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing ecological studies and green skills.

The Forest University will offer a wide range of degree and diploma programs across disciplines such as Forestry, Agro-Forestry, Social Forestry, Horticulture, Wildlife Studies, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, and Climate Change. These programs are designed to blend academic knowledge with practical training.

State-of-the-art infrastructure will be developed on campus, including modern laboratories, advanced research centers, smart classrooms, hostels, and residential facilities for students and faculty. With a strong emphasis on applied learning and research, the university will play a vital role in creating skilled professionals to address pressing environmental challenges.

This landmark institution is expected to emerge as a national hub for forest education, research, and sustainable environmental management.
