IMF Recognises India’s UPI as the World’s Largest Real-Time Payment System

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has received major global recognition from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In its June 2025 report titled “Growing Retail Digital Payments – The Value of Interoperability”, the IMF has identified UPI as the world’s largest real-time retail payment system based on transaction volume. This recognition highlights India’s rapid progress in building a robust, inclusive, and scalable digital payments ecosystem.

According to the IMF report, UPI accounts for nearly 49 percent of all global real-time digital payment transactions, surpassing leading systems in countries such as Brazil, Thailand, China, and South Korea. This remarkable share reflects the widespread adoption of UPI across India for everyday payments, from small retail purchases to utility bills and peer-to-peer transfers.

The success of UPI has been driven by coordinated efforts from the Government of India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Initiatives such as the promotion of BHIM-UPI, incentives for low-value transactions, and the establishment of the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) have played a crucial role in expanding digital payments beyond metropolitan areas. These measures have significantly accelerated adoption in small towns and rural regions.

Under the PIDF framework, millions of digital touchpoints have been created nationwide, including Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and QR code-based payment options, enabling even small merchants to accept digital payments with ease.

Launched in 2016 and developed by NPCI under RBI regulation, UPI’s key strengths lie in its interoperability, simplicity, and 24×7 real-time settlement. These features have transformed India into a global benchmark for digital payments, positioning UPI as a model for other countries seeking to build fast, secure, and inclusive payment systems.
