New BIS Standard for Agarbatti | Enhanced Consumer Safety and Product Quality

On the occasion of National Consumer Day 2025, a new Indian Standard for incense sticks was officially launched in New Delhi. The standard, titled IS 19412:2025 – Incense Sticks (Agarbatti), was released by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, at Bharat Mandapam. It has been developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to improve the quality, safety, and sustainability of agarbatti products in India.

The new standard focuses strongly on consumer health and environmental protection. Under IS 19412:2025, the use of certain hazardous insecticidal chemicals and harmful synthetic fragrance substances has been prohibited. These substances were found to pose risks to human health, indoor air quality, and the environment. By restricting such materials, the standard aims to ensure safer use of incense sticks in homes, temples, and workplaces.

For the first time, agarbatties will be clearly classified into three categories: machine-made, handmade, and traditional masala agarbatti. This classification will help bring transparency to the market and allow consumers to better understand the type and quality of the product they are buying.

Products that meet the requirements of IS 19412:2025 will be eligible to carry the BIS Mark. This certification will help consumers identify safe and reliable products and make informed choices with greater confidence.

India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of agarbatties. The new standard is expected to strengthen consumer trust while also supporting traditional artisans and the MSME sector by promoting fair practices, better quality control, and global competitiveness.
