Deepavali Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO
India is hosting the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) from 8–13 December 2025 at the historic Red Fort complex in New Delhi. This global meeting brings together member countries, experts, and cultural organisations to review, guide, and support the protection of living cultural traditions around the world.
One of the highlights of this year’s session is the inclusion of Diwali in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Diwali has been recognised because it is much more than a religious or regional festival. It is a cultural celebration observed by people across India and by millions of Indian-origin communities around the world. The festival represents the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, and the universal victory of light over darkness. Its rituals, decorations, community gatherings, and exchange of goodwill make Diwali a unique cultural expression shared by diverse groups.
Under UNESCO’s 2003 Convention, intangible cultural heritage includes traditions, performing arts, rituals, festive events, knowledge, and skills that communities consider part of their identity. The Intergovernmental Committee is responsible for safeguarding these elements by offering policy guidance, monitoring protection plans, supporting financial assistance, and approving new additions to the heritage lists.
India is currently a member of this Committee for the 2022–26 cycle and plays an active role in shaping global cultural preservation efforts. With Diwali’s inscription, India now has 16 elements on the ICH list. These include Vedic chanting, Ramleela, Yoga, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, Garba, and several other living traditions that reflect the country’s rich cultural diversity.
The recognition of Diwali by UNESCO not only honours India’s heritage but also celebrates a festival that connects communities across the world through shared values of joy, harmony, and light.
