China Opens the World’s Longest Expressway Tunnel in Xinjiang
China has inaugurated the 22.13 km long Tianshan Shengli Tunnel in Xinjiang, now the longest expressway tunnel in the world. The tunnel is part of the G0711 Urumqi–Yuli Expressway and allows vehicles to cross the Tianshan mountains in just 20 minutes, reducing the travel time between Urumqi and Korla from 7 hours to about 3½ hours.
The tunnel reaches a maximum depth of 1,112 meters and passes through 16 geological fault zones, making its construction extremely challenging. It was built using China’s self-developed Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), specifically designed to operate in extremely cold and high-altitude regions.
The G0711 Expressway spans a total of 324.7 km, constructed over five years with an investment of 46.7 billion yuan. This new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs, speed up trade, and promote tourism and regional development.
Officials say the tunnel is a major step forward in improving connectivity in Xinjiang, supporting local businesses, and enhancing transportation safety. It also highlights China’s engineering capabilities in overcoming difficult terrains and extreme environmental conditions.
With the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel, the region is set for faster economic growth, improved mobility for residents, and stronger integration with national and international transport networks.
This landmark project showcases how modern infrastructure can transform travel, trade, and regional development, making Xinjiang more accessible than ever before.
