Indian Coast Guard Inducts First Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’

The Indian Coast Guard has taken a significant step in strengthening maritime environmental protection with the induction of its first dedicated Pollution Control Vessel, Samudra Pratap. Built and designed indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the vessel features over 60% indigenous components, underscoring India’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative.

Samudra Pratap is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to effectively respond to maritime pollution and emergency situations. Its armament includes a 30 mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7 mm remote-controlled guns, complemented by an advanced fire control system. The vessel also features a shaft generator, a pollution response boat, high-capacity external firefighting systems, and modern pollution control equipment.

For enhanced maneuverability and operational efficiency, it is the first Indian Coast Guard vessel to incorporate a retractable stern thruster, dynamic positioning system, and flush-type side sweeping arms. These features make it highly effective in tackling emergencies, conducting search and rescue operations, and enforcing maritime pollution control laws.

Samudra Pratap is poised to play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), strengthening environmental security, and enhancing the Coast Guard’s capacity to respond to maritime contingencies. Its induction marks a milestone in India’s maritime safety and environmental protection efforts, reflecting the nation’s growing capability to develop sophisticated indigenous vessels for specialized missions.
