Rajasthan to Receive Tigress from Pench Under Inter-State Tiger Translocation Plan

India’s tiger conservation journey is poised to gain further strength as Rajasthan prepares to receive a tigress from Madhya Pradesh’s Pench Tiger Reserve under the inter-state tiger translocation programme. The initiative represents an important step in expanding and stabilising tiger populations through scientific and cooperative conservation efforts.

The tigress will be relocated to the Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (RVTR), located in Bundi district of Rajasthan. The reserve occupies a strategically significant position between the Ranthambhore and Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserves, functioning as a crucial wildlife corridor that facilitates animal movement across the region. Ramgarh Vishdhari is marked by dry deciduous forests and is nourished by the Mej River, offering suitable habitat conditions for large carnivores and their prey.

The key objective of the translocation is to enhance genetic diversity and establish a sustainable breeding population of tigers in Ramgarh Vishdhari. Introducing a breeding-age tigress from Pench, a well-managed and ecologically robust reserve, is expected to reduce the risk of inbreeding while improving predator–prey balance within the ecosystem. Over time, the move aims to transform the reserve into a self-sustaining tiger habitat.

This effort is aligned with Project Tiger, India’s flagship wildlife conservation programme, which emphasises habitat connectivity, population viability and long-term ecological stability. Inter-state translocation has become an effective conservation tool, especially for new or under-populated tiger reserves.

For Rajasthan, the move is particularly significant as it reduces pressure on Ranthambhore and strengthens the state’s broader tiger landscape. If successful, the initiative will reaffirm India’s global leadership in tiger conservation and collaborative wildlife management.
